Lithium Based Batteries

Large Lithium Ion Cells

These chemistries lead the pack due to their high energy density and ability to be quickly charged and discharged. Lithium based batteries are available in a wide variety of derivatives allowing a broad range of operating temperatures and discharge voltages.

Lithium based batteries do require more careful attention than other lower energy density battery solutions such Nickel and Lead based packs, this includes specific charging and discharge profiles, restrictive shipping requirements and care in handling and transport.

OEM Power Cells

These Chemistries often require PCM (Protection Circuit Modules), or the more sophisticated BCMS (Battery Control Management Systems). The BCMS can provide stand-alone control or communication buses to talk with the system computer.

Life cycles of 300 to 400 would be considered typical based upon a full Depth of Discharge. Their lifespan can be greatly extended with lower depths of discharge, low charging rates and proper care and maintenance. Many advancements are being made aimed at improving cycle life, stability and energy density every year.

These batteries are preferred when high energy density and low weight are the critical design parameters. Typical examples of devices using lithium based batteries are cellphones, 2-way communications, medical and other instrumentation devices and unmanned systems.

Nickel Based Batteries

OEM Power Cells

Nickel based batteries are a popular choice due to their low cost, durability and less complex charging requirements. Nickel based batteries also offer a much broader operating temperature range than lithium batteries making suitable for a broad range of industrial applications.

With proper system design these batteries can easily reach 1000 to 2000 cycles when limited to a maximum of 80% depth of discharge.

OEM Power Cells

Nickel based batteries are commonly used in applications that require fairly high discharge rates but cost is a key factor. Nickel based chemistries have fewer restrictions for transportation when compared to lithium making them popular for use in power tools, pulse instrumentation and other electronic devices.

Lead Based Batteries

OEM Power Cells

Lead based batteries are one of the first types of rechargeable batteries, having been used since the mid 1800s. While these batteries are heavy and do not provide the energy density of nickel or lithium batteries they are still among the most popular due to their low cost, low maintenance and readily available supply.

Lead batteries are sensitive to both low charge rates and depth of discharge but do excel in may common uses such as starter motors and energy storage. Other limitations include a shorter life span, larger physical footprint and weight than their nickel and lithium counterparts and improved manufacturing and material processes have greatly improved the lead based batteries in recent years and many new versions are now available with superior performance versus batteries available in the past.

Safety and low cost make them ideal for cost sensitive applications where their weight and size are acceptable, such as wheelchairs, forklifts, uninterruptable power supplies, etc.

Protection Circuits

BMS Protection Batteries

Venom Industrial provides both PCM (Protection Control Modules) and BCMS (Battery and Charging Management Systems) for a wide variety of batteries and chemistries. Using these control systems greatly improves both safety and performance of any battery system.

Many rechargeable batteries have very high energy density and very specific charging and discharging requirements. Abusing these batteries can lead to battery damage and in severe cases battery rupture and fire. To help assure that the battery stays safe and still provides peak performance, battery protection circuits are often included within the battery pack or wired in line with the device being powered.

PCM circuits are designed to provide basic protections such as overcharge, over discharge and short circuit protection. These are fairly simple circuits offering a limited degree of control and safety.

When a higher degree of control is required a BCMS system is utilized and can perform a much broader range of controls including short circuit protection, cell balancing, individual cell monitoring for internal resistance, temperature and more.

BMS Protection Batteries

BCMS modules are available as stand-alone circuits or as Smart BCMS for communicating with your computer, charging system or flight controller. Many communication methods are available including I2C, SMB, USB, RS232, and more.
