Lithium based batteries are a popular choice due to their reliability, stability and long lasting power. When compared to Nickel or Lead Acid chemistries, Lithium batteries offer a much higher energy density with little to no maintenance required due in part to the relatively low self-discharge rate of this chemistry type. With the ability to be quickly charged and discharged lithium chemistries also lend themselves well to applications with high-energy and high-power and demands. Lithium batteries are also an excellent choice for devices that require accommodations for size and weight requirements as well as targeted operating temperatures and operating voltage.
VPW offers a wide range of standard Lithium based cells and batteries from a variety of derivatives to accommodate various project goals and we can also custom design cells and battery packs to meet your critical design parameters. Common formats include cylindrical cells, pouch cells and prismatic cells each with their own unique benefits.

Battery Protection & Management Circuits
To help increase the safety of Lithium batteries and also extend service life a protection circuit is required to regulate voltage and current within safe limits for the specific lithium chemistry used. Protection circuits also aid to provide the battery conformity to the UN38.3 transportation requirements for lithium batteries. VPW has extensive experience with both stand alone and integrated protection circuits including basic PCM (protection circuit modules) as well as BMS (battery management systems).
PCM – Protection Circuit Modules
The PCM is a fairly simple and straightforward protection device, which does not require software integration allowing for rapid development keeping costs to a minimum.
Some of the features available for Protection Circuit Modules include:
- Cell Balancing
- Over charge and over discharge protection
- Over temperature protection (NTC thermistor)
- Over current and short circuit protection
BMS – Battery Management Systems
The BMS typically handles the same protections found with PCMs and incorporates a microprocessor, which allows for additional monitoring, control and reporting of a wide variety of parameters based on specific customer requirements. Through integrated software users can gain real time access to an abundance of data through a variety of protocols including the common I2C and CAN bus as well as many others.
